WordPress website design and development cost: what affects the price
A WordPress site can cost almost nothing to start, or tens of thousands of dollars to build, because the price follows what the site must do and who builds it. This guide shows what drives WordPress website development cost, with dated market estimates from sources we could open. They are estimates from sellers, and they are not our prices.
In short
Four things set the price: how custom the design is, which features the site needs, how much content must be written, and who builds it. A simple site on a theme costs a fraction of a custom build with integrations.
Ask every provider for a written scope with each item priced. A single total with no breakdown makes quotes impossible to compare.
How much does a WordPress website cost? Market estimates, not our prices
The WordPress software itself is open source and licensed under the GPL, so the cost is in the domain, hosting, theme, plugins and the work to build and maintain the site.
These ranges come from two guides we opened, and both are published by sellers, so treat them as directional. They are market estimates, not our prices.
- Do it yourself. WebsiteSetup.org's guide, last updated 22 November 2025, puts starting costs for a self-built WordPress site at $95 to $180, covering a domain, a year of hosting and an optional premium theme. Hostinger, a hosting seller, lists domains at $10 to $20 a year, shared hosting at $2 to $15 a month and premium themes at about $30 to $100 in its guide of 14 October 2026.
- Freelancer. WebsiteSetup.org gives WordPress developer rates of $50 to $95 an hour and, for a small business site of 40 to 80 hours, a total of $2,000 to $7,600, not counting hosting, theme or premium plugins. Hostinger lists freelance developers at $45 to $120 an hour and a simple custom site at $1,000 to $5,000.
- Agency. WebsiteSetup.org says full-service agencies charge $5,000 to $15,000 for a complete small business site including strategy, design, development and content. Hostinger puts a complete custom project at $5,000 to $30,000 or more, and says large or enterprise projects cost more.
WordPress.com pricing plans: what the hosted version costs
Some people searching for WordPress pricing mean WordPress.com, the hosted service. Its page, read on 3 November 2026, lists these prices in US dollars, excluding taxes, billed yearly:
- Free plan: $0, with a WordPress.com subdomain.
- Personal: $4 a month. Premium: $8 a month.
- Business: $25 a month. Commerce: $45 a month.
- A custom domain is free for the first year on paid yearly plans, and monthly plans do not include one.
These plans cover hosting and software. They do not cover design or development work. If you need a custom design, integrations or a migration, you are back to the freelancer and agency ranges above.
What is custom WordPress development?
Custom WordPress development means building a site around a business's own needs, with its own design, features and functions. Understanding what WordPress development services cover helps you decide how much customization, functionality and technical skill your project needs.
Custom vs template-based WordPress websites
The choice between these two sets the base price.
- Template-based sites use a ready-made theme and plugins. They are quicker and cheaper to set up. They can look like other sites, may not match your brand closely, and can be harder to scale.
- Custom sites are built for one client. They give you more control over the look and the features, and they take more design and development time.
Benefits of custom WordPress development
- Unique design and branding. The site matches your brand and does not look like a template.
- Specific functionality. Advanced search, a custom store setup or a membership system can be built in.
- Performance and room to grow. A custom build can carry only the code you use, which helps speed, and it is easier to add features later.
What factors affect the cost of custom WordPress development?
These are the factors behind every WordPress website cost, in rough order of effect.
Website design: simple vs complex
A simple site with a few pages and plain layouts costs less than a complex one with animation, interactive elements and custom page designs. The more intricate the design, the more hours designers and developers spend. Professional designers charge more for work that reflects your brand. You can lower the cost with a premium theme, which gives up some uniqueness for a lower price.
Functionality and features
Basic plugins, such as SEO tools, contact forms and social links, are often free or cheap. Advanced custom features, such as CRM links, booking systems or custom post types, cost more.
E-commerce features raise the price the most. Setting up WooCommerce, payment gateways, product pages and inventory takes time, and subscriptions, product options or advanced shipping add to it.
Content creation
Clear, accurate, search-friendly writing takes skill and time, and a large site needs a lot of it. Photography, video, custom graphics and licensed images add cost too.
Responsive and mobile-friendly design
A site must work on phones, tablets and desktops. Doing that well takes extra design and testing time, particularly for fast loading on small screens.
SEO and performance optimization
Structured data, metadata, sitemaps and speed work make a site easier to find and quicker to use. Some basics come with a build. Deeper technical SEO and speed work take specialist time.
Developer expertise and location
Hourly rates vary by skill and by where the developer works, as the ranges above show. A team in your own time zone is easier to reach during your day. A team elsewhere can lower the rate, and it needs clear written specifications and calls scheduled at overlapping hours.
Our delivery team is in India, and we say so plainly. We set calls in your working hours and write the scope down before anything starts.
What are the costs involved in custom WordPress development?
A custom build has stages, and each stage adds cost. Ask for a quote that prices each one.
- Planning and discovery. Understanding the goals, competitors and audience, and agreeing the scope in meetings with stakeholders.
- Design. Wireframes, prototypes and UI and UX design. More custom work and more revision rounds mean more cost.
- Development. Custom code, database set-up and any integrations with a CRM, payment system or marketing tools.
- Testing and launch. Checking links, speed and browser compatibility, then moving the site to the live server.
Maintenance and updates
A live site needs hosting, regular updates to WordPress, themes and plugins, security patches and backups. Hostinger's guide puts a maintenance service at $50 to $300 or more a month, against $0 to $70 a year if you do it yourself. WebsiteSetup.org lists managed WordPress hosting at $60 to $250 a year. These are market estimates, not our prices.
What type of WordPress website does your business need?
- Small business site: basic pages, a blog and a contact form. A simple, professional presence.
- E-commerce site: product listings, a cart, payments and shipping. It needs secure, tested checkout.
- Large corporate site: custom dashboards, a larger editing system and room to handle heavy traffic. It usually needs customization and ongoing development.
- Portfolio site: a gallery of work, a contact form and a layout that works on any device.
How to save on WordPress website development cost without lowering quality
- Choose the right team. Pick a WordPress development company or freelancer with proven work on the type of site you want. Our WordPress development page shows how we work, and our page on hiring WordPress developers covers adding developers to your own team.
- Prioritize features. Launch with the must-haves and add the rest as the business grows.
- Use sensible hosting and plugins. Pick reliable hosting at a fair price and trusted plugins. Skip premium plugins you do not need.
How to compare WordPress development quotes
Ask each provider for the same things: the pages and features included, the number of design revisions, who owns the code and the accounts, what happens after launch, and how fixes are billed. A quote that lists packages and what each leaves out is easier to judge than one total. We do not publish a price list. You see the scope and each fee in writing before work starts.
Conclusion
A WordPress site's price follows its design, features, content, the person building it and the care it needs after launch. A well-built site can bring customers and support your brand for years, so spend on what the business needs, and phase the rest.

Questions buyers ask us
How much does a basic WordPress website cost?
A self-built site can start near $95 to $180 in its first year, according to WebsiteSetup.org (last updated 22 November 2025). Hostinger lists a simple custom site built by a freelancer at $1,000 to $5,000. These are sellers' market estimates, not our prices.
What is the cost of a WordPress website for a small business?
It depends on who builds it. WebsiteSetup.org puts a freelancer-built small business site at $2,000 to $7,600 and an agency build at $5,000 to $15,000. Hostinger gives a wider $1,000 to $5,000 for a simple custom site. These are market estimates, not our prices, and they leave out some items such as premium plugins.
How much does a custom WordPress website cost?
Hostinger puts a complete custom project at $5,000 to $30,000 or more, and says large or enterprise sites cost more. Custom design, plugins, integrations and e-commerce all push the price up. These are market estimates, not our prices.
Is WordPress free to use?
The WordPress software is open source and licensed under the GPL, so you can download it free. You still pay for a domain, hosting, a premium theme or plugins if you want them, and any design and development work. WordPress.com, the hosted service, has a free plan and paid plans from $4 a month billed yearly.
How much does WordPress maintenance cost per month?
Hostinger lists a maintenance service at $50 to $300 or more a month, and $0 to $70 a year if you do it yourself. The scope matters more than the figure: ask what updates, backups, security scans and fixes are included.
How long does it take to develop a WordPress website?
WebsiteSetup.org gives 4 to 8 weeks on average for a freelancer-built small business site. A custom design, a store or a migration takes longer, and late content from the client is the most common cause of delay. Ask for a dated plan.
Should I hire a WordPress developer or use a page builder?
A page builder suits a simple site where you can live with the limits of its blocks. For custom features, a distinct design or a site that must grow, a developer helps you avoid code that is hard to maintain. Ask what you will be able to edit yourself after launch.
