What is zero-click SEO? How to win visibility without clicks
Zero-click SEO is the work of earning visibility and trust in search results that answer a question on the page, so the searcher gets what they need without opening any site. This guide explains what it is, why it is growing, which results cause it and what to measure when clicks are not the only goal. Our AI SEO work covers the same ground for AI answers.
In short
A zero-click search ends on the results page. The answer is a snippet, a panel, a map listing or an AI summary, and the searcher never visits a site. Zero-click SEO accepts that and aims to be the source those results quote.
Treat it as an addition to normal SEO, not a replacement. You still need pages that rank and convert. You also need to count visibility, branded searches, calls and map actions, because they show value that sessions miss.
What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a query where the searcher gets what they need without clicking a link. The answer sits on the results page itself, for example in:
- Featured snippets.
- AI Overviews and other AI summaries.
- Knowledge panels.
- Local packs and map results.
- Calculators, definitions, weather and other instant answers.
The effect of an AI summary is measurable. Pew Research tracked 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025. Users clicked a result link in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% where none did, and clicked a link inside the summary itself in 1% of visits. That is one study of one month, so read it as a direction and not a rule.
Why are zero-click searches growing?
Search engines want to answer quickly, and the answer formats keep spreading. Rich results such as featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and local packs now sit above the regular links for many searches, and AI summaries add another layer.
Phones and spoken searches push the same way. When someone asks a phone a plain question, the reply is usually a short answer and not a list of pages.
What causes zero-click searches?
Several result types let people finish a task without leaving the results page:
- Featured snippets pull a sentence, list or table from one page to the top of the results.
- Knowledge panels and entity cards gather the main facts about a person, place or brand.
- Local packs and maps show a phone number, rating and directions, which is often all a “near me” searcher needs.
- Instant tools such as calculators and converters do the task on the results page.
- AI summaries build one answer from several pages, which moves value from single pages to the answer itself.
How does zero-click search affect SEO?
Rankings still matter, but they tell less of the story. Impressions, visibility and assisted results now count next to direct visits.
Declining organic click-through rates
When a result type fills the top of the page, a page that ranks first can still get fewer clicks than it once did. Check your own Search Console data for this: look for queries with many impressions, a good position and few clicks.
Shifting focus to visibility and brand
Teams now watch impressions, how often they appear in answer features and brand searches. Being quoted in a trusted result can build recognition even when visits stay flat.
The new importance of structured data
Google says structured data gives "explicit clues about the meaning of a page" and can enable richer displays, but it does not promise them, and it recommends JSON-LD. Mark up only what is visible on the page.
Measurement beyond sessions
People deal with a business without visiting its site. Calls, map taps, direction requests, review views and branded searches all show visibility that drives sales. Add them to your reports next to sessions.
What are the types of zero-click search results?
Each type shows content without a click, and each suits different content.
- Featured snippet. A short paragraph, list or table from one page, at the top of the results. Google says you cannot request one: its systems decide whether a page would make a good snippet. You can block snippets with a nosnippet rule if you choose.
- Knowledge panel and entity card. A fact summary for a notable brand or person, with links.
- People Also Ask box. Related questions with short answers. A page with clear, structured answers can be shown here.
- Local pack and map results. A group of nearby businesses. Searchers choose without visiting a site.
- Instant answers and tools. A direct result, such as a calculation. Niche sites compete here on specialized topics.
How are SEO, PPC and content strategy changing due to zero-click?
- SEO: traffic against presence. Aim for impressions, branded search and authority signals as well as visits.
- PPC: filling lost clicks. Paid search can cover high-value commercial searches where organic clicks are thin. This is where the choice between SEO and paid search matters, and you should balance the two on your own numbers.
- Content: answer first. Put the direct answer near the top of the page, then add the depth for readers who want more. The same style helps pages get quoted by AI assistants, which our AI SEO page covers.
- Reporting: blended. With fewer direct sessions to analyze, rely on first-party data, calls and lead counts to show what SEO is worth.
How to use zero-click insights to optimize your search strategy
Zero-click results show what people want and how they react to the results page.
- Investigate your queries. In Search Console, find queries with many impressions and few clicks, and see which are answered by a snippet, a panel or a summary. Decide whether being seen is enough for each.
- Target questions and entities. Write short, direct answers to the questions your buyers ask, with lists and tables where they help. This is the practical way to go after “position zero”, the featured snippet at the top.
- Tie it to business goals. Where a local pack lets customers call or visit, connect those actions to revenue.
- Target high-intent topics. Focus on topics where a single view brings a buyer closer to a decision.
Google also says that there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema to add. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Sites in these features are counted in the overall Search Console data, under the Web search type.
How to monitor zero-click search performance
A dashboard of sessions alone no longer shows the full picture. Add these:
- Impressions and average position. In Search Console, see how often you appear and where, even with no click.
- Answer features. Note when your pages appear in snippets or People Also Ask results for your main questions, and track how the count changes.
- Brand search and direct visits. A rise can show that your visibility is working even if organic clicks are flat.
- Local and offline signals. Count calls, direction requests and messages from your business profile.
Final takeaway
Zero-click search is the normal way many people use search now, and it can be an opportunity. When you build clear answers on a sound SEO base, you gain visibility, trust and leads from searches that never produce a visit.

Questions buyers ask us
What is zero-click SEO in simple terms?
It is the practice of making your content appear in the answer features on the results page, such as snippets, panels and AI summaries, so that you gain visibility and trust even when the searcher does not click.
Why are zero-click searches growing?
Search engines want to give quick answers, especially on phones and with spoken searches, so they show more snippets, panels, local packs and AI summaries on the results page. That leaves less reason to open a site for simple questions.
Does a zero-click strategy mean traditional traffic no longer matters?
No. Visits still matter, mainly for buyers who need more than a short answer. It means you also count impressions, branded searches, calls, map actions and leads, because they show value that sessions do not.
How can small businesses use zero-click SEO?
Focus on your local listing, reviews and short, direct answers to the questions customers ask, so that a searcher can see you and call from the results page.
What is position zero?
It is the informal name for the featured snippet at the top of the results. Google says you cannot request one, because its systems choose pages that would make a good snippet. You can improve your chances with clear answers near the top of the page.
Do I need special markup for AI Overviews?
Google says there are no extra requirements and no special schema to add. Your page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and any structured data you use must match the visible text.
